Sunday School for Children

At Grace Community, we take God's mandate to train up the next generation in His Word & ways very seriously. Indeed, as the Psalmist writes:

“Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! 2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, 3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” (78:1-4)

We truly believe that as good stewards of all the gifts that God gives His people, children are to be trained & reared in the gospel of Jesus Christ, that (1) God in His mercy would save them for His glory, and (2) that they might be equipped to live godly & productive lives to the praise of His glorious grace.

And so, unlike many churches, we are not content merely to teach these youngsters moral stories from the Bible, or even to get them to memorize rote Scripture passages. No. We believe that making children religious without ever aiming for their conversion is setting the next generation up for bitterness and resentment towards the true God whom they never really learned about. So many unbelievers I know have grown up in the church, and have done the Sunday school schtick. They know all the answers, and have gone through all the motions, and yet they never realized that a mere knowledge about the Bible apart from the saving truths of the gospel is not what true Christianity is.

At Grace Community we have intentionally chosen to use the Children Desiring God curriculum, offered through the ministry of Desiring God, best known for the Christ-centered, gospel-saturated, God-satisfying resources of Dr. John Piper.

We are not content with our children simply being told, “Be like David”, or, “Be like Abraham.” Though the Bible indeed gives such men of faith as examples to emulate, we ultimately believe that all of the Bible was written to point to the gospel of Jesus Christ, that our children, like us, are called to believe on the One whom David & Abraham pointed forward to; to the One who came to save people like David & Abraham & the world, from their falling short of God's glorious standard (Romans 3:23, NLT).
